Gujarat Titans 2022 IPL Season Analysis

GUJARAT TITANS 2022 IPL SEASON ANALYSIS

                                                                                        

Cricket is a team game, and helped by individual brilliance on that particular day.

One team that clearly defined the above statement in IPL 2022 was the title-winning team Gujarat Titans.

Nobody gave them a chance when the auctions were over. However, Gujarat Titans defied all the odds against them to become the 2nd team to win an IPL trophy in their maiden season. They won the finals against the team which had achieved that feat first.

There were new heroes emerging every match to sail them home when they were caught in turbulent situations.

Let us Analyse their 2022 season.

Most Runs in IPL 2022

Most Runs by a GT batter in IPL 2022

Gujarat Titans had 3 of their batters in the Top 15 run-scorers of IPL  2022. Hardik Pandya (487 runs),  Shubman Gill (483 runs), and David  Miller (481 runs) occupied the 4th,  5th, and 6th positions in the batting charts. There were good contributions from Wriddhiman Saha and Rahul  Tewatia who took care of the powerplay and the death overs respectively.

Rashid Khan was a surprise package as he finished some games for his team off his bat as we saw in their games against Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Most Wickets in IPL 2022

Most Wickets by a GT bowler in IPL 2022

Mohammed Shami was the leading wicket-taker for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022 with 20 wickets at an economy of 8. Rashid Khan closely followed him with 19 scalps at 6.59 economy.

Yash Dayal, in his debut IPL season, was a very good find for the franchise. He picked 11 wickets in 9  matches at an economy of 9.25 and an average of 26.9 runs per wicket.

Hardik Pandya chipped in with some useful overs and returned with 8 wickets at 7.28 economy and an average of 27.75.

Lockie Ferguson and Alzarri Joseph combined to pick  9 wickets between them at an economy of 8.89.

Sai Kishore, in his debut IPL season, played only 5 matches and got 6 wickets at an economy of 7.56 and an average of  20.16.

The average bowling economy in IPL 2022 tournament was 8.39. It was 8.72 for the pacers and 7.79 for the spinners.

Powerplay:

Gujarat Titans had scored the 3rd most runs (740  runs) in the Powerplay in IPL 2022. They had an average powerplay score of 46 per match. The tournament average powerplay score stood at 43.

Wriddhiman Saha scored the most runs for Gujarat  Titans in the powerplay. He scored 217 runs, which is  32% of the total, at a Strike rate of 133.95. Shubman  Gill was not too far away with 215 runs.

Matthew Wade, coming in at Number 3 scored 111  runs in the powerplay at a strike rate of 121.97.

80% of the powerplay runs came from the top 3  of the Gujarat Titans Wriddhiman Saha, Shubman Gill, and Matthew Wade.

Gujarat Titans had the 4th best strike rate among the 10  teams in the powerplay of IPL 2022. They had a Strike rate of 117.30 in the powerplay in IPL  2022 which is slightly less than the tournament average strike rate of 121.26.

Wriddhiman Saha had the best strike rate for Gujarat Titans in the powerplay in IPL 2022 with 133.95. Wade had a strike rate of 121.97 . The others’ strike rate fell below 120.

We can conclude from the above points that the powerplay batting was not the best for the Gujarat Titans. The reason could be that they did not have enough experience in their lower middle order and could have tried to start cautiously due to that.

Middle Overs :

Gujarat Titans scored the 3rd most runs  (1275 runs) in the middle overs phase of  IPL 2022. They scored at an average of 80  runs per match in this phase which was equal to the tournament average in this phase.

Hardik Pandya with 332 runs in this phase had the 3rd most runs in the middle overs phase of IPL 2022. David Miller with 296 runs in this phase is 6th on the list. Shubman Gill had scored 238 runs in this phase and he is 13th on that list.

Hardik Pandya, David Miller, and Shubman Gill combinedly have scored close to 70% of the team’s runs in the middle overs.

Gujarat Titans had the 3rd worst strike rate in the middle overs of IPL 2022. They struck at 127.33  while the tournament average was 129.44.

Shubman Gill had the best strike rate for Gujarat Titans in the middle overs. His strike rate improved from 118.33 in the powerplay to 147.82 in the middle overs. Matthew Wade’s strike rate dropped from 121.97 in the powerplay to 97.86 in the middle overs.

Abhinav Manohar, in his debut IPL season, played 3 innings in the middle overs phase and scored 59 runs at a healthy strike rate of 147.50,

David Miller, though got the second most runs for GT in the middle overs (296 runs), had a strike rate of 128.90 which was less than the average (129.44).

Hardik Pandya scored at a Strike rate of 133.87 in this phase.

Death Overs :

Gujarat Titans were the 2nd highest (648) run-scorer in the death overs in IPL 2022. They scored at 10.83 runs per over compared to the tournament average of 10.79.

They were largely powered by David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan. These three ensured that Hardik Pandya, the finisher wasn’t missed as they let him play his new role at the top of the order.

David Miller had the most runs for Gujarat Titans in the death overs in IPL 2022 (174 runs). Rahul Tewatia is not too far away with 158 runs. They occupy the 3rd and 4th  spots respectively in the list of most runs in the death overs in IPL 2022.

David Miller and Rahul Tewatia contributed 55% of the runs for the team in death overs in IPL 2022.

Gujarat Titans had a strike rate of 169.61 in the death overs of IPL 2022 which was slightly more than the tournament average of 168. Rashid Khan has the highest Strike rate in the death overs for the team (242.85) scoring 85 runs in 35 balls in that period.

David Miller’s strike rate rose from 129.44 in the middle overs to 174 in the death overs.

Rahul Tewatia (179.54) and David Miller (174) are in 10th  and 13th position in the list of highest strike rates in the death overs of IPL 2022 with a cut-off of a minimum of 100 runs scored in that phase.

Abhinav Manohar in 4 innings at the death overs scored 37 runs  off 23 balls at a strike rate of 160.86

Hardik Pandya was another key batter in this phase as he scored 90 runs in 59 balls at a strike rate of 152.54.

GT bossed this stage as most of their wins came when they went hard in death overs thanks to David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan. These three contributed to their wins against  CSK, PBKS, and SRH in their last over finishes.

Gujarat Titans found themselves in the right half of the chart for the bowling average on all three phases of the tournament which suggests that they were a good bowling side giving lesser runs for each wicket they take.

Gujarat Titans had an overall bowling average of 27.84 in  IPL 2022 while the tournament bowling average was 26.77.

Powerplay:

Gujarat Titans got the 2nd most wickets in the powerplay (27).

The powerplay was handled by Mohammed  Shami who was on song every time he bowled with the new ball and got 11 wickets in that period at an economy of 6.62.

Mohammed Shami has the joint-most wickets(11) in the powerplay in IPL 2022 (along with  Mukesh Choudhary(CSK)).

Lockie Ferguson and Yash Dayal picked 6 and  5 wickets respectively in this phase.

Gujarat Titans had the 4th best economy rate in the Powerplay in IPL 2022 (7.68). The average bowling economy in IPL 2022  was 7.63.

Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya were impressive in the powerplay with a  very good economy of 6.62 and 5.54.

 

Middle Overs:

The middle overs were handled by the modern spin wizard Rashid Khan. He picked 17 wickets in this phase and is the 5th highest wicket-taker in this phase of the matches in IPL 2022.

Lockie Ferguson was mostly introduced in this phase of the game. Although he picked only 3 wickets, he had a decent economy of 8.08.

Sai Kishore was good in this phase with 5 wickets at an economy of 7.

Gujarat Titans had an economy of 8.1 in the middle overs while the tournament average economy in this phase was 8.05.

Rashid Khan in this phase picked his 17  wickets at an economy of just 6.21. He also had the 3rd best economy rate in the middle overs phase of IPL 2022.

Sai Kishore was also economical in this phase with an economy of 7.

Death Overs:

Gujarat Titans took the joint most wickets (29) in this phase.

Again, Mohammed Shami was excellent for  Gujarat Titans in the death overs with 8  wickets. He is the joint 3rd highest wicket-taker in the death overs of IPL 2022 (tied with Josh  Hazlewood, Obed McCoy, T Natarajan, and Shardul Thakur).

Gujarat Titans were brilliant in the death overs, being the most economical bowling side (9.6) while the average bowling economy in the death overs in IPL 2022 was 10.68.

Getting the most wickets(29) and being the most economical side in the death overs (9.6) gives a sign that Gujarat Titans rocked the opposition in this phase of the game.

Conclusion :

In IPL 2022, Gujarat Titans proved that “It doesn’t matter how you start but how you finish”.

Gujarat Titans were one of the best finishing sides in the batting and were the best in bowling the death overs.

Gujarat Titans had almost everyone in their 11 contributing to their team’s success. They had as many as 8 different players winning the player of the match award – Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Shubman Gill(2), Hardik Pandya(2), David Miller(2), Rashid Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Wriddhiman Saha.

Their coaching staff consisting of Ashish Nehra, Gary Kirsten, and Vikram Solanki too deserve equal appreciation for their off-stage preparations.
